This year the focus of the Sports Hall of Fame Committee has been updating the gym lobby.  All the memorabilia on the walls was removed, catalogued and carefully stored.  The lobby was then painted by the Amityville school maintenance staff.  The Hall of Fame committee, with the permission of the Amityville School District, then purchased Team signs and had them hung on the walls.  At the time of writing of this “Year in Review”, plans are being made to have the pictures and plaques on the walls in team order.  It is our hope that someof the pictures will be up in time for this year’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Once again this year we presented two scholarships of $250 each for the athletes that displayed leadership on sports team.  The students applying for the scholarships included a 250 word essay defining leadership and how each student displayed leadership on their respective teams.

This year, the Hall of Fame Committee helped with, Coach and Hall of Fame Chairman, Reynolds Hawkins’ Summer Track and Field Camp.  At the end of the camp, Reynolds generously donated $280 to the AMHS Sports Hall of Fame.

Applications started being submitted to the Hall of Fame for consideration for induction into the 2015 class in April.  The Committee encourages nominations to be submitted throughout the year with June 1st the deadline for submissions for this year’s class. The Committee takes the nominating process very seriously and meets several times reviewing each nomination at length before making the final decision.  We thank everyone for submitting names for consideration.  Each name submitted is reviewed for consideration for the next 5 years.

We continue to sell Memory Lane bricks which are placed at the entrance to the track.  These bricks provide a lasting memory and a historical gateway to our track and football field.  Please speak to a director, or got to our website,, for more information and an application to purchase a Memory Lane brick.  The cost of the brick is $125.

The AMHS Sports Hall of Fame Committee thanks the Amityville School Administration and the Amityville Board of Education, as well as the community at large, for all their support in making the AMHS Sports Hall of Fame a continuing success.  Special thanks to AMHS Head Custodian Randy Rugen and his team for helping out when needed.
