The Year in Review

While dire weather reports and storm clouds were forming from the south, the Amityville Memorial High School Sports Hall of Fame inducted 17 new members. Inductees and past inductees came from as far away as Florida and South Carolina to enjoy a night of reminiscing and camaraderie. Two days later Amityville, along with most of the south shore of Long Island, would be hit with a super storm called Sandy that left Amityville paralyzed for days and people still recovering from the effects.

Despite the storm,, the Board of Directors has had a busy year. Thanks to the efforts of Pat Linehan, we now have a more sophisticated web site that you can visit by going to Nomination forms as well as other pertinent information can be downloaded at the site.

Another dream was fulfilled in the spring of 2013 as the Amityville Memorial High School Sports Hall of Fame became incorporated as a Not-For-Profit Corporation within the State of New York.

The achievement that we are most proud of this year was instituting two scholarships of $250 each for the female and male athlete that displayed leadership on a sports team. The students had to apply for the scholarship and write a 250 word essay defining leadership and how they were leaders on their respective teams. Two very fine Amityville High School Seniors were awarded the scholarships at the Senior Awards Ceremony June 6,2013. They are Jahmal Burt and Davina Roberts.

June 1, 2013 came and the selection process for the 2013 class began. Once again we had an outstanding group of nominees and the decision making process was long and deliberate. The board met several times reviewing each nomination at length before making the final decision.

The board thanks everyone who submitted names for the Sports Hall of Fame. Each name submitted is reviewed for consideration for the next five years.

We continue to sell Memory Lane bricks which are placed at the entrance to the track. It provides a lasting memory and a historical gateway to our track and football field. If you are interested in purchasing a Memory Lane brick, please speak to one of the directors, who will be happy to give you an application form. The cost of a brick is $125. Thanks you for your support of this project.

The Amityville High School Sports Hall of Fame board thanks the Amityville school administration and the Amityville Board of Education as well as the community at large for all their support in making the Amityville Memorial High School Sports Hall of Fame event a continuing success.
